Work Shift Requirement

The Greenpoint-Williamsburg CSA is run and maintained by the CSA core members, Garden of Eve Farm, and the CSA member community. Moreover, a CSA is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters. Because of this relationship and the responsibility it entails, the Greenpoint-Williamsburg CSA requires that each member work at distribution or at the Garden of Eve Farm Stand at the McCarren Park Farmer's Market. Work shift requirements vary depending on the distribution date and location you choose.

Saturday Distribution Workshifts: Saturday distribution work shifts will begin at 8:30am at the Garden of Eve farm stand at the Greenpoint Farmer's Market. We have found over the years that helping the farmers set up the stand greatly expediates getting the vegetables and information for distribution. Once all the vegetables, fruits, and eggs have been received and set out, work shift members will then help the distribution coordinator by checking members off lists or manning the vegetable, fruit, or egg bins. At the end of sign-up, around noon, work shift members will help load left over vegetables into the farm's truck.

Saturday Market Workshifts: The main mission of the Greenpoint-Williamsburg CSA is to support local family farms. The large size of the Saturday distribution allows us to really fulfill our mission by lending a helping hand at the Garden of Eve stand in the Greenpoint Farmer’s Market. Work shift members help run the stand, stocking vegetables and helping customers. Our assistance allows the stand to function with fewer employees, keeping costs low for our farmer. We hope to funnel the excitement and energy of our membership into the community at large through our participation at the market, giving members the opportunity to get a first hand look at the local agriculture. Because shifts at the market tend to be more intense than distribution, we have split market shifts into 2 hour allotments.

Wednesday Volunteer Workshifts: Due to the small size of the Wednesday distribution, a lot of the CSA’s weekly success rides on work shift members arriving on time and working hard. Farmer Chris will drop off all the crates in the parish hall sometime during the day on Wednesday. 2-3 work shift members from the first shift will arrive at 5:30pm in order to set up and get ready for distribution at 6:00pm by organizing the produce and setting up the Community Corner and the swap box. The 3 work shift members will check in members exactly the same way as on Saturdays. Another wave of work shift members arrive at 630pm, finishing up distribution and cleaning up the parish hall before removing the empty crates to the side yard. The number of volunteer workshifts required by Wednesday members will be determined by the total number of Wednesday members. Our best guess right now is that it will be 2 shifts. (Shifts consisting of ½ of a share distribution; 4 shifts = 2 whole distributions.)
